HUSEAS DOCUMENTS HOPKINSON MURDERS: Marion McMillan Huseas has released her book, “Legacy of Fear: Mark Hopkinson and the Bridger Valley Murders.” She documents Hopkinson’s brutal crime spree in southwestern WYO and the consequences, resulting in the “the most complicated murder investigation in the history of Wyoming jurisprudence.” Marion is the author of three books relating to Western history, including “Sweetwater Gold,” the story of the state’s gold rush which won first prize from the National Federation of Press Women. She has worked as a curator of history at the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne and at the Fort Bridger State Historical Site near Evanston. FMI: Merimac Publishing Company, 307-640-2444.
Comments:
I live in Evanston and picked up the book at the only place that seems to have it: Dee's Boutique on Front Street. It's a fascinating and chilling read. My two older coworkers have been digging up all manner of lore from that time; one went to many rodeos in the valley with Mark Hickey when they were young and had to testify when Hickey attempted to use him as an alibi.

You most likely already know this, but attorney Gerry Spence included an account of the Hopkinson trial in his book Gunning for Justice that is a much more emotional and therefore very riveting narrative. He was good friends with the bombing victims, attorney Vince Vehar and his family.

I really enjoy your blog, by the way. It's rewarding to know that Wyoming has such a strong literary presence, and I appreciate the information. Keep up the good work.

Dear A: Thanks for your comments. I'm hearing good things about the book. Perhaps I need to read the book by Huseas and then Spence's "Gunning for Justice." Or vice versa. Right now I'm finishing the novel "Red Water" by Judith Freeman, an account of the Mountain Meadows Massacre as told by three of John D. Lee's many wives. It's kind of a strange companion piece to HBO's "Big Love."
